ICANN: Kills Your Competition

ICANN who is basically responsible for managing the assignment of domain names and IP addresses, has a new proposal that can help you kill your competition called Rapid Suspension System.

Basically, for a small few, someone can complain, the site will be removed and THEN you get to defend yourself.

Yeah, it’s a half-ass backwards method.

Currently, their is already a system in place that people can use on infringers but it’s $1,600 to file and the site isn’t turned off until it’s determined that the complaint is valid.

And to limit damages, a company could always file a DMCA take down notice to have it removed. But companies don’t like this method because it requires that you file a lawsuit within 5 days or the site goes back-up.

Which, IMHO, that’s the way it should be. After all, it’s a legal matter and ICANN is not a court or government. Although, they do try and act like it.

However, under this new system, a pissed off customer or competitor could pay the small fee and have your site pulled.

Yes, it could be that simple to kill your competition with ICANN.

If this concerns you and it should, send ICANN an email and tell them that you oppose the Rapid Suspension System proposal.
