IE: Opening Shortcuts In New Tabs

After my trial of IE 8 I have finally gotten my shortcuts to once again open in new tabs instead of reusing windows.

So here are the ways to do it. Each one may or may not work for you and if you screw something up, don’t blame me. :)

Method 1:

From the browser, click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > uncheck the box next to “Reuse windows for launching shortcuts.”

Method 2:

From the browser, click Tools > Internet Options > then click the “Settings” button under the Tabs section and chose the circle next to “A new tab in the current window”

Method 3:

If the above two still cause you problems, this one should do it. At Least did for me.

Open Windows Explorer and select Tools > Folder Options > File Type tab.

Then scroll down to where it lists URL under Extensions, click it and then click Advanced.

Now click open under Actions followed by edit.

Under “Application used to perform action:” change:

rundll32.exe ieframe.dll,OpenURL %l

to

rundll32.exe ieframe.dll,OpenURL %1

Note: The only difference is the last character.

I had the same experience and finally dumped IE. There just seems to be too many problems with it. I use FireFox and Google Chrome.
